As an added, non-cash benefit to our employees, we offer a “free Friday” each month. This is paid time off to do whatever they want. It fosters teamwork and collaboration — a “while you are out I will cover you, and while I am out you cover me” type of situation. There is only one catch: They have to be up-to-date with all their work and make sure their position is covered while out.
Staff members use this time off for vacation, taking kids to the doctor, running errands, charitable volunteering, and various other things they want to do. They love the 12 extra days off on top of their regular vacation and sick leave days. We have not seen any drop in output since implementing this three years ago. As a matter of fact, I believe it has increased efficiency.
