There’s a long list of the ways generative AI tools, such as Claude or ChatGPT, can help financial advisors save time. All the possibilities may seem daunting; however, you can slowly inch toward using generative AI.
A great place to start is by using AI prompts. Much of the power of generative AI is in the prompts — questions or requests — you make within the generative AI chat box. For example, let’s say you struggle with writing client emails, possibly taking you several minutes to write an email. Here’s an example of how generative AI can help:
Using the free version of ChatGPT, type in the chat box “I’m a financial advisor. Draft a brief email to a client reminding them to schedule their annual review meeting.”
In a few seconds, you may get this response:
Subject: Let’s schedule your annual financial review
Hi [Client’s First Name],
I hope this message finds you well. It’s time for your annual financial review, and I’d love to connect and see how things are going — both in life and with your financial goals.
During our meeting, we’ll review your progress, address any changes in your personal or financial situation, and discuss opportunities or adjustments for the year ahead.
Please reply with a few dates and times that work for you, or feel free to schedule directly using my calendar link: [Insert scheduling link].
Looking forward to catching up!

Prompting for more specific information
ChatGPT may prompt you with a follow-up question to be more specific, such as “Would you like a version for clients who haven’t had a review in more than a year or one tailored for retirees?”
Maybe that’s not quite what you’re after either, so you revise the prompt to, “I would like a version for a client who is a doctor who is two years from retirement. She also did not come in for her annual review last year. I would like her to bring her spouse to the meeting.”
Subject: Let’s plan ahead — your financial review is overdue
Hi Dr. [Last Name],
I hope you’ve been well. Since we missed your annual review last year, I’d like to reconnect and ensure we’re on track — especially with retirement just two years away.
This is a critical time to review your current plan, make any necessary adjustments and prepare for a smooth transition into retirement. I also recommend bringing your spouse to the meeting so we can discuss your goals and future together, ensuring you’re both aligned.
Please let me know a few dates and times that work for you, or feel free to use my calendar link to book directly: [Insert scheduling link].
Looking forward to helping you move confidently into this next chapter.
Warm regards,

Another generative AI tool, another version
Here was the response in the free version of the generative AI tool Claude with the same prompt of “I would like a brief email for a client who is a doctor who is two years from retirement. She also did not come in for her annual review last year. I would like her to bring her spouse to the meeting.”
Subject: Annual review meeting — important planning discussion
Dear Dr. [Client Name],
I hope you’re doing well. Since we missed your annual review last year and you’re approaching retirement in two years, I’d like to schedule an important planning meeting to discuss:
- Your current retirement readiness and portfolio positioning
- Transition planning strategies for your medical practice
- Tax optimization opportunities leading up to retirement
- Estate planning considerations
- Health care and insurance coverage in retirement
Given the significance of these retirement decisions, I’d appreciate it if your spouse could join us to ensure you’re both aligned on your goals and timeline.
Please let me know your availability for a 90-minute meeting in the coming weeks. We can meet at my office or virtually, whatever works best for you both.
I look forward to hearing from you soon and helping ensure you’re well prepared for this exciting next chapter.
Best regards,

What to be aware of
- Don’t include your client’s personal information or any information that may identify the client, especially when using free generative AI versions. Treat anything you input as public information.
- Proofread and personalize the email. AI makes mistakes, which you’re responsible for as soon as you send the email to your client.
- Check with your compliance/legal department’s policies on using generative AI tools.
It can be well worth your time to spend a few minutes a week trying generative AI to see how this powerful tool can help you be more efficient. Using generative AI can give you more time to spend building relationships with your clients, team, friends and family — or more time to simply relax and recharge on your own.
