When clients come to me, they are often focused on one thing: building wealth. While investments are an important part of the conversation, they are only one piece of a much larger financial picture.
My role as an advisor is not simply to help clients grow their portfolios. It’s to help them achieve their goals and maintain financial security along the way. To do that, I need to understand everything that could influence their future, such as taxes, debt and risk management, estate planning, and spending habits.
Plotting a course
I often use the analogy of a ship. My job is to help clients travel from where they are today to where they want to be in the most direct and effective way possible. To keep that journey on course, we need to consider every factor that could create obstacles along the way. Growing wealth is important, but so is protecting it.
Uncomfortable conversations
To truly help clients, advisors must be willing to discuss topics that clients may find uncomfortable, including overspending, insurance needs and estate planning. These conversations are not about criticism or judgment. They are about helping clients understand how today’s decisions affect their future goals.
The more holistic our advice becomes, the more value we provide. When we take the time to understand a client’s family, finances, concerns and aspirations, we can create strategies that address every aspect of their life.
For holistic financial planning, I need to know everything about my clients, so I ask them a lot of questions over time. And I take the time to gain their trust.
Clients want an advisor who understands them completely — not just their investments. When we see the full picture, we can deliver more personalized advice, stronger outcomes and greater confidence for the people we serve.
