Getting the most out of staff

When you have other staff members in your business, you want to make sure they’re the right people to help your operation thrive. Crawford McGill, CFP, AAMS, a five-year MDRT member from Houston, Texas, recently shared an insight about getting the best from his employees:

“I’ve been through probably about five different staff people. Normally it’s a one-on-one situation, and it was always some excuse. ‘I can’t do this.‘ ‘If I only did this I’d be more successful.’

“I talked to another senior advisor, and his comment was, ‘The problem is not them, it’s you. It’s about leadership. Not management, leadership. Leading your staff the right way.’ And once I took hold of that, I was able to demonstrate how to do a policy, then watch them do it, and just reaffirm what they’re doing and really help them work through the process instead of just assuming they should know and they should be able to go figure it out.

“It’s really just training and leading them the right way, and now I have a great relationship with my staff person. We work really well together. It’s about growing from that point and really asking them what do they want out of life. It’s not an issue anymore. Once I realized it’s on me.”
