The cycle of connections, contributions and credibility

By Daniel Joseph O’Connell, MBA

Social media has really driven my practice, and when I started out doing this, I didn’t anticipate the end result of it.

I enjoy writing, so I would write articles which would get picked up and published all over the country. I would put those on my LinkedIn page, and people would start to notice me and want to talk to me or bring me in or do business and start connecting me with other people. It ultimately led to some very successful doctors who were on radio shows wanting me to come in and talk about insurance and how that complemented what they were doing. Then radio shows like Fox News and other local affiliates started wanting to have me on; now they have my phone number and call me on a regular basis, saying “Can you come on today?”

I can take those sound bites and segments and put them back onto my social media, where my clients see them and I get invited to go speak in front of different groups. It’s instant credibility: “The guy was on Fox News radio; he must know what he’s talking about.” So then I get brought into an association, luncheon group and several other venues as a subject matter expert, which give us the opportunity to write business. It’s been exciting to see that. That’s not how I ever would have dreamed it up.

Now I’m invited to speak in front of more people and do more things, and that only goes to add to my credibility, which only goes to add opportunities for me.
