Working as a financial advisor in Trinidad and Tobago, we’re too often viewed as salespeople rather than trusted professionals. Unfortunately, there is still a perception that our role is simply selling products. If more people truly understood what insurance and financial planning can do for individuals, families and future generations, I believe our profession would receive much more respect.
For me, financial advisors are just as important as doctors or lawyers because we have the opportunity to change people’s lives. Early in my career, when I repeatedly encountered skepticism or rejection, it was difficult not to take it personally.
What helped me push through were the clients who took the time to tell me how much my work had impacted them. Hearing someone say, “Alyssa, thank you. You’ve changed my life,” reminds me why I do what I do. Those moments are the fuel that keeps me motivated and passionate about serving others.
Today, I have a different perspective. If someone chooses not to work with me, I understand that they may not yet recognize the value I can bring. I know the difference thoughtful financial planning can make, not only for individuals but for their families and generations to come. This has never been about making a sale. It’s about helping people create security, confidence and a better future.
At the end of the day, my mission is simple: to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. When clients understand that financial advice is about protecting futures, supporting families and creating lasting legacies, they begin to see our profession for what it truly is — one built on service, trust and impact.
