How to separate work and home

You’re on call 24/7, and it feels like you can never get the right balance between the demands of your business and those of your personal life. A few simple rules, however, can make it easier for you to leave work in the office and your home life at home, said corporate coach Nathan Jamail.

Be present at work: When you’re at work, you need to be at work: learn to leave any family dynamics or problems at home. The one thing that can make any family problem even more difficult is losing your job because personal issues are affecting your work performance.

Be present at home: When you’re home with your family, you need to be present. Leave your phone and suit jacket at the door. Just like the company that pays their salary deserves that employee’s very best, your families deserve your very best too.

Tips to remember to be present at work and at home:

1. Never walk in the house on the phone.

2. Change from work clothes to home clothes immediately upon arriving home so you feel the part.

3. Make eye contact with those speaking with you, whether they are your coworker, your boss or your 3-year-old.

4. Share your work/life balance expectations with your company team and your family. Then stick to them.

Work life balance, as mentioned above, only works for a very small group of people. More people are seeing the value of work life integration.
