5 simple ways to embrace work-life balance

It’s no surprise that Satish Sharma does a good job of maintaining work-life balance. In fact, on a recent speaking assignment with financial services professionals in the Philippines he spoke about the value of the Whole Person concept of MDRT, and the 25-year MDRT member from Kuwait City, Kuwait, makes a point of promoting the Whole Person concept in his own life as well.

Sharma says that the outer circle of your life must always be your family, social obligations and corporate responsibilities. The inner circle should always be your job, and the two circles should never be switched. If you focus all of your time on work, not only will you not be happy, but your family will not be happy and the continuous stress of work will affect your health, which impacts the quality, quantity and longevity of your work.

That is why Sharma makes sure to do the following:

  1. Bring his wife with him on all work-related travel
  2. Take vacations once every two months (he travels for work once per month)
  3. Perform no work on weekends
  4. Delegate tasks at the office so as not to do all work himself and limit his involvement to what he does best
  5. Make sure that money is not the motivator but the byproduct of service

In addition to all of this, Sharma also makes sure to gather his extended family for vacations, “so we can all eat together and live together and understand each other and build bonds between siblings.”

“If I don’t get all my kids together today, tomorrow when I have left this world, the kids will not have any bonding between themselves,” he said. “My purpose is to make sure the kids continue to bond together as siblings even after I am gone.”
