The Top of the Table mindset: Goal setting with purpose

Big cases may help MDRT members qualify for Top of the Table once, but it may not keep them there every year. What can give financial advisors continuing success are goals backed by strong processes.

This was the case for Makoto Mitsui, a 12-year MDRT member who qualified once for Top of the Table and couldn’t quite qualify the following year. “The fact that I did not reach Top of the Table was a turning point in my career. Top of the Table cannot be accomplished by a ‘wannabe’ mindset,” Mitsui said.

MDRT Annual Meeting inspiration

Though feeling slightly defeated for not achieving Top of the Table again, he went to the MDRT Annual Meeting. There, he met with other MDRT members who helped renew his commitment to qualifying for Top of the Table again.

Powerful goal setting and time management

He backed up this commitment by thoroughly vetting his processes and goals to ensure they would allow him to qualify for Top of the Table consistently. He also divided his annual goal by six to determine what his monthly target should be to qualify in the first six months of the year. Then he divided it into weekly, daily and hourly goals to manage his time.

“This approach enabled me to qualify for Top of the Table once again,” Mitsui said. And he’s continued to consistently qualify for Top of the Table every year for the last eight years.

Despite a busy schedule, going to MDRT meetings is something he makes time for. He has attended the MDRT Annual Meeting, MDRT Global Conference and Top of the Table Annual Meeting. “Each of the three global meetings of MDRT gave me a significantly huge stimulus. I am an independent advisor and not in a team, so marketing activities could be lonely. At MDRT meetings, I get to meet people who are working in similar environments,” Mitsui said.

The meetings allow him to talk with both Top of the Table members and newer MDRT members to share experiences with like-minded peers.

Mitsui believes these opportunities to connect with other MDRT members, as well as time management, help him both consistently reach Top of the Table and allow him to spend time with his family.
