What MDRT leaders wish they knew earlier

Our MDRT leaders over the years have risen to the top of their profession and the organization, learning lessons along the way. During the 2016 Annual Meeting in Vancouver, several members of the MDRT Executive Committee shared what they wish they would have known during their first year of membership:

President Brian Heckert, CLU, ChFC: “The title does not make you a leader. Being a leader makes you a leader. A leader leads always.”

Second Vice President James Douglas Pittman, CLU, CFP: “Be a better listener.” Pittman advocated for having a clear sense of what others are saying so you can then lead them accordingly.

Secretary Ross Vanderwolf, CFP: Vanderwolf noted the importance of delegating because you can’t do everything yourself. Sharing responsibility will help you learn something and improve, he said.

Nominee Regina Bedoya, CLU, ChFC: It can be easy to get overwhelmed by information at the Annual Meeting, she said. The best approach is to pick one or two ideas/strategies that immediately can be applied. “Don’t try to do it all. Be very strategic in your actions.”
