What family businesses can teach about staffing

Hiring is challenging — you do your best to match the right person to the right role, but there is only so much you know about someone from their resume and the interview process. A lot is learned and shown on the job.

When the person you are matching to the role is your brother, though, it is safe to say you have a clearer idea of who your new co-worker is.

“When you have a family business, you know intimately what each individual is skilled at,” said Matthew Joseph Murphy, EPC, a six-year MDRT member from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. “Say your brother was an introvert; you would not put him in charge of marketing the company, going out and entertaining clients. That would go to somebody better suited in that role.”
