You never know when an opportunity is going to come

One day I was going to an appointment, and I realized I needed some forms. At first I thought, I can have one of my colleagues meet me and get the form. Then I thought, No, no, just get your butt in the office and get the form, and go to the appointment.

Sure enough, I ended up going into the office. I’m in my office, and then my team members calls me: “Maria, can you please take this client. It’s an orphan, but he has a question about the endowment claim.” “Susie, I just came in. OK, I’ll take it. No problem.” I took the phone call, and it ended up being my biggest client, worth about $30 million. And I wasn’t going to pick up the phone. I almost said, “No, I’m in and out.” It was completely unexpected.

You just never know where an opportunity is going to come from. All it takes is one to get you going to the next.
