The motivating power of a morning routine

It wouldn’t take much to spend one morning working out, meditating, reviewing goals, reflecting on gratitude and drinking a vegetable smoothie.

Matthew Blocki, ChFC, CFP, a four-year MDRT member from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, does this literally every morning Monday through Friday.

It reflects discipline and focus that he translates to clients, telling them how a few years ago he used to hit the snooze button three times, frequently skipping his workout and breakfast and always feeling rushed. To motivate himself, he programmed the coffee machine to begin five minutes after his alarm went off but without a pot underneath it. So if he didn’t wake up, the coffee would spill all over the place.

If you don’t similarly automate your financial plan, Blocki tells clients, you’ll just be hitting snooze and spilling your money.

Staying positive

Of course, the primary reason for Blocki’s mornings is avoiding negative, subconscious thinking and staying present and positive. He cited the maxim of “You become what you think about” and his belief that the books you read and five people you surround yourself with will determine the direction of your life as well. For Blocki, that direction includes working hard six days a week for two months, taking two weeks off of vacation (to places like Thailand, Florida and Hawaii), then repeat.

“I think you can triple your production working hard for 10 months a year rather than working partially for 12 months a year,” he said. “When I’m in, I’m in.”
